McEvoy to consider options with Sysmo
Trainer Tony McEvoy will consider his options with Sysmo after the horse came up with the widest draw in the $300,000 Ballarat Cup.
McEvoy admitted barrier 18 in Saturday’s Ballarat Cup (2200m) was not ideal when told of Sysmo’s draw after getting off a plane in Sydney on Wednesday.
“I might consider taking him to Sydney and re-assess,” McEvoy said.
“I don’t know that I would run from that gate, but I won’t make that decision until I digest the make-up of the field.”
The Ballarat Cup and next month’s Werribee Cup are the races McEvoy mapped out for Sysmo, but he said there was an option coming up in Sydney if he decided against a start on Saturday.
Sysmo carried a big weight and was beaten just over two lengths when fourth at Flemington last start behind the promising Divan.
He had to regain momentum after being checked at the 300m.
Sysmo is at $12 with the Robert Smerdon-trained Ungrateful Ellen the early favourite at $6.
Darren Weir has Akzar and Tooleybuc Kid lining up in the Cup on the trainer’s home track with Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne to ride from barrier five.
Chris Waller has the two horses at the top of the weights in Junoob and Index Linked while last year’s winner, the Paul Jones-trained Mujadale has drawn barrier two.
