McEvoy looking past Australian Cup with Big Memory

Herbert Power Handicap winner Big Memory certainly deserves his place in Saturday’s Group 1 $1 million Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington.
Yet, trainer Tony McEvoy is looking beyond Saturday’s big Group 1 to a race later this month, and indeed another race in seven months.
“He’s in good order, no doubt of that, but he needs this run over 2000-metres to have him right for the 2400-metres of the ($350,000) Mornington Cup (March 28),” he explained to Racing Network on Thursday.
Apart from being worth a lot of prize-money, the Mornington Cup also carries the added lure to owners and trainers of a ballot-free ticket into the $3 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) in October.
After winning last year’s Herbert Power on Caulfield Guineas day, Big Memory ran a creditable 10th in the Caulfield Cup, beaten less than three lengths by Japanese star Admire Rakti.
Big Memory goes into the Australian Cup off two good runs this preparation – a fourth in the Carlyon Cup and a third placing in the Listed Victoria Cup.
