Hayes Poised for Guineas tilt

Emerging three-year-old Poised To Strike will be aimed at next year’s Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) after a soft first-up win in Saturday’s Christmas Trophy Handicap (1200m) at Flemington.

And trainer David Hayes hinted that the gelding could also be nominated for the inaugural $5 million All-Star Mile (1600m) in March, which will be run at Flemington a fortnight after the Guineas.

The son of Akeed Mofeed ambled up to his rivals at the 300m and, under light riding from Craig Williams, easily put a length on O’Tauto and Wild Vitality over the final furlong.

“I think with the dominance of that win, we’ll probably just space his races so we’ve got him for the autumn and I’m hoping he’s an Australian Guineas horse,” Hayes said.

“He’s by Akeed Mofeed and he’s owned by the man that bought Lindsay Park (Pan Sutong) so he’s a pretty important horse for the farm.

“We’ve probably got to enter him in the All-Star Mile, don’t we.

“He won’t get picked (in the public voting) but if he wins the Guineas he’d be the perfect wildcard horse.”
