A corker from Kourkam!

Imported French galloper Kourkam returned to racing with an impressive victory in the Camp Gallipoli Handicap over 1600m at Morphettville on Saturday, February 28.

Solid in the market at $3.70, Kourkam came from well back in the field to score a half-length win from Go Dreaming ($12) with Capodecina ($10) a similar margin away third.

Trainer Tony McEvoy was suitably impressed.

“He did a really good job,” McEvoy said. “He was first up at 1600 metres, had to come wide to put himself into a winning position, then had to withstand late challenges.

“Matt (winning jockey Matthew Neilson) said the five-year-old had tended to switch off when he hit the front.

“He just clocked off and thought he had done enough, so obviously he has more to offer.”

McEvoy said he had nothing specific in mind with Kourkam.

“I wanted to see that he had come back in good order, so now I can stretch his races out in distance, and start mapping out a program.’

“The horse came to us from Europe as a maiden – he has now won four races for the stable and at his penultimate run last year wasn’t too far away in a very competitive Bendigo Cup so there is still plenty of upside with him.”
